How to install Open VM Tools instead of VMware Tools on Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS

If you installed VMware Tools before you should uninstall it first. you can do it as root with this command:

     # vmware-uninstall-tools.pl
 

after that do the following commands to install Open VM Tools:

  • Debian and Ubuntu:

          # apt-get install open-vm-tools

  • Debian and Ubuntu with GUI:

          # apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop

  • CentOS:

          # yum –enablerepo=extras install epel-release

          # yum install -y open-vm-tools

  • CentOS with GUI:

          # yum –enablerepo=extras install epel-release

          # yum install -y open-vm-tools-desktop
